April meeting report

The meeting began by looking at the Manchester convention booklet. The 'Wrist Watch' by Quentin Trollip was chosen as the first model to fold. This was followed by a heart ring from a back issue of BOS. The idea of starting a challenge to create a model of a given subject was discussed. The suggested subject would be given in this newsletter and those who wish to take part would bring along their folded interpretations at the next meeting. It was agreed this is a good idea and the first subject is described later in this news letter.

A discussion took place regarding security and music for the London Origami CD Rom project. It was noted that the possibility exists for those buying the CD to illegally copy the diagrams and distribute them. Doing so would be in breach of copyright law, and it was decided to mention this at the beginning of the CD. This is a problem which exists in many areas including music CD's and it was noted that the main reason for producing the CD was for Artistic reasons rather than income. Copyright theft is a difficult problem to control. It was also decided to mark each diagram with the name of the CD prominently so anyone who did illegally receive a copy of a diagram was aware of the source and of their part in 'receiving stolen goods'. If anyone not attending the meeting has any thoughts on copyright issues please reply to this e-mail with your thoughts.

At a previous meeting we had discussed the use of music on the CD Rom. Robin Glynn gave a live performance of some of his acoustic guitar music. It was felt that this style was ideally suited to the CD and Robin agreed to create the music.

Folding challenge No. 1

Create an original Monkey. Interpretation is up to you, (realistic, abstract, cartoon). Your model should be brought along to the May meeting. This challenge was inspired by Larry Hart. As mentioned above this is the first time we are doing a folding challenge. It's success depends upon people taking part. Have a go, even if you do not normally create models — this may be the inspiration you need.

London Origami CDRom Project

We are intending to create a CDRom which will incorporate London members work, thoughts and inspiration on Origami. If you are interested in being featured in the CDRom, come along to our next meeting and find out more.

Photographing models - One important aspect of this CD is good photographs. For those who are intending to photograph their own models for the CDRom the following link provides some valuable information on how to photograph small objects artistically. Unfortunately I was unable to link to the specific page. Click on the link below; then on the opened page: Click on Who's afraid of digital cameras? 2 (this link is black text on the right hand side of the page). Then on the next opened page click on Section 5.1.

What benefit are mini meetings?

If you are a beginner it is useful to see how other people fold models.
If you are having difficulty with a model perhaps someone else can help.
We are fortunate in the London area to have a number of enthusiasts who design models; therefore a new model appears at most meetings together with diagrams.
If you design models yourself the meetings are an opportunity to test diagrams and receive feedback on your design.
Perhaps you would like to create your own models but don't know where to start - others will be able to give you some advice.
Ultimately Mini meetings are an opportunity to meet other origami enthusiasts.

We hope to see you there.

The organiser of the London meetings is Steve Brown (Tel No. is in the BOS Magazine). Any questions either ring Steve or send as a reply to this e-mail.
